Parallel Curriculum Model
Discover how Beatty Secondary School shapes students into purposeful stewards who live, think and act sustainably through the Parallel Curriculum Model.

At Beatty Secondary School, we believe that deep learning happens when students see how knowledge connects — and when they are inspired to act on what they discover. Sustainable living is not just a theme we teach. It is a way of thinking and being that we help every Beattyian grow into.
What We Mean by Sustainable Living
Sustainable living, to us, means learning to live well — and to make choices that are good not just for ourselves, but for the people and world around us. We help every Beattyian find balance across four areas of life:
Self: Building good habits, looking after our health, and making thoughtful choices day to day.
Social: Developing empathy, seeing things from others' perspectives, and contributing to our community.
Environment: Caring for the natural habitats and ecosystems that all life depends on.
Economy: Thinking about waste, value, and how we can use resources more wisely.
The goal is a Beattyian who does not just understand these ideas but lives them — and who feels a sense of responsibility to look after what they have inherited, for the generations that come after.
The Parallel Curriculum Model
Our Parallel Curriculum Model (PCM) is how we bring sustainable living to life in the classroom. It weaves together four dimensions of learning: the Core (foundational knowledge), Connections (links across disciplines), Practice (applying skills in real contexts), and Identity (growing as a responsible steward of the world). These four dimensions do not run in sequence — at the heart of it all is Identity: everything a student learns points back to the kind of person they are becoming, while the other three dimensions run in parallel, deepening together as students move through each unit.
Learning unfolds through our 3E Framework:
Expose — Students build foundational knowledge through lessons, workshops, and curated experiences, opening up the Core and inviting Connections across subjects.
Empower — Students develop agency by applying their learning through authentic tasks and presentations, deepening their Practice.
Engage — Student ambassadors lead community outreach, creating real-world impact beyond the classroom and forming their Identity as responsible stewards.

This journey spans four interconnected spaces — Curriculum, Campus, Culture, and Community — so that sustainable living becomes a habit of mind, not just a lesson in the classroom.
The result: Beattyians who are adaptive thinkers, agile learners, and active contributors — equipped with the values, skills, and competencies to thrive in the 21st century and help build a greener Singapore.
